1983-1986: Yellow Pearl - Floating TV in a Vortex

The iconic opening titles, which had been in use since July 1981, began to appear somewhat dated, with dust marks becoming more noticeable on newer television sets. By 1983, Michael Hurll, the executive producer of Top of the Pops, sought to refresh the opening title sequence ready for the 1000th edition of the show. From the 1000th edition of TOTP, the 1981 title sequence was kept but albeit confined to a rotating television tube against a slit-scan background surrounded by a couple of flying platinum discs. The seamless transition from the television to the studio was achieved through an exploding record, similarly to the 1981 title sequence. A television was physically mounted on its back on top of a programmable motorised rig, and the live-action sequence was captured on 35mm film using a motion control camera rig. In addition to this minor update, the theme tune underwent a slight adjustment, incorporating a slightly lower-pitched rendition of "Yellow Pearl" by Phil Lynott, with the words "Top… of the… Popssss" being more pronounced.

Between 1983 and 1986, the presentation package underwent several alterations. The in-vision team experimented with various fonts for end-of-performance captions, while the chart rundown graphics underwent substantial transformations. Initially, the chart rundown featured a black background, but it was subsequently replaced by a slightly animated blue, yellow, pink, and black instrument background. The chart rundown music also underwent a modification at the end of 1984, transitioning to a soft rock rendition of "Yellow Pearl."

The iconic opening title sequence remained visible on screen until April 1986, marking the advent of a new era characterised by computer-generated graphics.
