The 80s was well and truly here, and Top of the Pops was beginning to look a bit tired and stuck in the 1970s still. Executive Producer at the time, Michael Hurll, thought the show needed an injection of life, and hence on the live 900th edition of the show, a new opening sequence and theme tune debuted.
For the first time in seven years, TOTP had an updated logo, opening title sequence, and theme tune. The new opening titles commenced with a distinctive theme tune, "Yellow Pearl," composed by Midge Ure and Phil Lynott. The new opening titles were accompanied by a series of coloured vinyl singles ascending towards the camera from the sky (an illusion created using dry ice). During this live-action sequence, chart positions from 30 to 1 were displayed on the screen, interspersed with sweeping lighthouse beam effect was created using smoke, a rotating lamp, and cut-out sheet steel mounted in front of a light. The opening title sequence culminated with a pink record soaring into the frame, bearing the TOTP logo on its label. The record then exploded in slow motion, facilitating a seamless transition to the TOTP studio.
Regrettably, the new opening title sequence was initially met with concerns at the BBC regarding its potential to induce epileptic fits. Consequently, it underwent a safety check before its initial broadcast.
Throughout this period, end-of-performance captions were regularly incorporated into each show, and the visual style of these graphics underwent refinement until the next opening title refresh in mid-1983. Fun fact – the iconic TOTP neon logo was not added to the TOTP studio until January 1982.
