The year it all began! Top of the Pops broadcast for the first time on TVs across the nation on Wednesday, 1st January 1964, at 6:35 p.m. on BBC Television. Music would never be the same again. 1964 was dominated by the British Invasion led by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Animals. Merseybeat, energetic pop-rock, thrived. American soul and Motown, with artists like The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations, also gained popularity. Homegrown pop ballads and crooners, like Cilla Black and Dusty Springfield, also frequently visited the TOTP studio in Manchester.
