Review of the 80s

A reflective look at the 80s with performances from chart-toppers such as Frankie and Shaky, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue, Wham!, Bros, Duran Duran, The Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and more. Written and introduced by Paul Gambaccini and Mike Read.

Year in Review

Top of the Pops provided the perfect barometer of the UK's end-of-decade uncertainty in 1989.

Top of the Pops hosted Pete Waterman’s final year of chart domination, courtesy of Jason Donovan, alongside the dawn of Madchester, a fresh front of female artists with attitude and power, an old-school duet between a 60s legend and an 80s icon, funki dreds and, yes, that pesky bunny.

Meanwhile, Top of the Pops gets another facelift, and Radio 1’s old guard stand down as a team of fresh-faced recruits from children’s television take the helm of the BBC’s weekly pop warhorse, which remained torn between its sense of heritage and the emerging threat of youth TV.
