Year in Review

In 1980, Robin Nash was replaced by Michael Hurll. Hurll introduced more of a "party" atmosphere to the show, with performances now accompanied by balloons and cheerleaders, and more audible audience noise and cheering. Gone were the days of a static audience gathering awkwardly around an artist, well… nearly. A new era began for TOTP. Guest co-presenters and a music news feature were introduced for a short while, but had ceased by the end of 1980. Gone was the chart rundown at the beginning of the show that had been present since 1976, and in it’s place a couple of seconds of a spinning black and white TOTP logo - with a gaping TOTP theme tune hole. The chart was now split into three sections in the middle of the programme, with the final Top 10 section initially featuring video clips. The 70s inspired studio sets still existed in some form, but now included a 1980 sign to recognise a new decade. Bigger changes to the set were coming though as 1981 drew closer.
