Stanley Appel was a British television producer and director whose work spanned more than four decades of BBC light entertainment. Originally joining the BBC as a studio cameraman, Appel rose through the ranks to become one of the corporation's most experienced producers, known for his stylish handling of music, variety, and live performance programming. Appel was no stranger to Top of the Pops, producing editions in the 70s and 80s. He became executive producer of Top of the Pops in 1991, overseeing the show during a period of renewal and modernisation. Appel refreshed the programme's presentation and energy, introduced new on-air talent, and re-emphasised live performance and visual flair at a time when British pop was undergoing major change. Beyond Top of the Pops, Appel produced and directed numerous BBC entertainment and music specials, including Cilla Black's Surprise Surprise, The Val Doonican Music Show, The Two Ronnies, and The Generation Game.
